A 6-week European residency for New York based visual, transdisciplinary or live artists 

September – October 2023

 

VONK ?

VONK is a studio and residency space for visual and transdisciplinary artists (artists working in the cross over between visual arts and performance / live arts) We support national and international residents with working space, artistic feedback, an international network, presentation opportunities, and financial support. 

 

VONK’s residency space is located in Hasselt, a small city in Belgium near the Dutch border, and a 50-minute train ride away from Brussels and Antwerp. 

 

The residency

We are offering a residency to a NYC based artist between mid September 2023 and the end of October 2023. During the course of 6 weeks, you will benefit from a free workspace, network opportunities in Belgium and France, and meet our other residents from Belgium, Spain and Estland. We will cover your travel and accommodation expenses, provide you with an artist fee and a production budget. We are looking for an artist that is working project based in the discipline of visual, installation or live arts – and everything in between.  
 

We are looking for an artist:

   ●  Who is active in the visual or transdisciplinary performance and live arts.

  • Who has a high quality of artistic work and a concrete project proposal.

  • Who has a professional career in the USA and is currently NYC based

  • Who is outgoing and enthusiastic to (with our help) build a network in Europe

   ●   Who is willing to present their work during a public try out at the end of the residency.

We offer :

   ●   An empty and clean workspace of 7 by 20 meters with 24/7 access

  • A plane ticket from NYC to Belgium and back.

  • A small apartment during the entire period of your stay

  • An artist fee of 3.500 €

  • A reimbursement of your production costs linked to your artistic work in Hasselt (with a maximum of 5.000 €)

  • A three day network program in Paris in collaboration with Lafayette Anticipations.

   ●    Studio visits from Belgian curators and programmers. 

You need to :

   ●   Be available from mid-September to the end of October 2023.

  • Hold an international passport and visa to travel to Europe. 

  • Be able to sustain an international network.

  • Have a positive attitude to explore a new field

   ●   Use VONK in all of your communications linked to this program and be open to share your practice in a (podcast) interview.

  • A motivation why you would benefit from this residency (max. 0,5 A4 page)

  • An answer to the following questions 

    • What art institutions or organizations in Belgium/The Netherlands would you like to connect with and why? (max, 0,5 A4 page)

    • What is your current position in the NYC and international art scene? (max 0,5 A4 page)

   ●   A link to your online portfolio (create a link to a google drive or a hidden page on your website)

This residency program is a project of VONK. It is funded by the Government of Flanders, the City of Hasselt & the City of Genk.
